Where o’ where?

Now that the Dems are the beneficiary of the lobby dollars and are in control of the pork barrel, it seems they are not as interested in providing the American people lobby reform and the elimination of earmarks.  And what about the much ballyhooed Minimum Wage Hike?

No reform, no legislation, just lots of sound bites and political posturing from this 110th Congress.  No change from the 109th Congress.  The voters wanted change and got more of the same.

Its not just a rant of mine. Others also see an extreme need for Social Security, Healthcare and Medicare reform as an imperative.  The article, Medicare Meltdown, contains some great stats and data to support that need.

I fear that the current leadership of the 110th Congress requires a serious of polls that indicate that the “people” desire these reforms before they even consider legislation. The desire for political power trumps serving the people.

America’s Populations are Moving

“Democratic politicians like to decry what they describe as a widening economic gap in the nation.  But the part of the nation where it is widening most visibly is their home turf, the place where they win their biggest margins (these metro areas voted 61% for John Kerry) and where, in exquisitely decorated Park Avenue apartments and Beverly Hills mansions with immigrant servants passing the hors d’oeuvres, they raise most of their money”.

From a great article by Michael Barone which describes the shifting population in America and what it says about American politics.

What Newspapers Need to Do to Survive?

It’s really quite simple – - Focus on providing information. Don’t focus a printing a newspaper. Maybe they should look at themselves as news purveyors.

Use all available venues and methodologies for providing news: print, online, text messaging, cell phone video, e-mail, video, and audio.

Use sections like: 1) News (just the facts). 2) Analysis (what the facts means). 3) Opinion (what should the response be to the facts – be sure to publish the authors name). Don’t try and fool people by mixing them all together.

Get rid of the Paper’s Editorial Board – - Management should concentrate on delivering the news. Don’t publish any Editorial Board Opinions or Vote Recommendations.

Make it customizable – - There are many more sources available today……don’t try to be the all-in-one.

Make it into a service (paid content)/advertisement supported operation. If you’re giving people what they want, they’ll pay for it.

Deadlines and Benchmarks

Since the leadership of the 110th Congress is so interested in benchmarks and deadlines for action by the Iraqi administration and/or American troop withdrawal.

When are we going to see the benchmarks for social security reform, medicare reform, tax reform and immigration reform? I’d like to remind that leadership about the deadlines for social security reform, medicare reform, tax reform and immigration reform – - November 3, 2008.

Senator Schumer now wants to hand out money to people who took out subprime, ARM they should not have taken out. I lost money on a stock trade last week…..where do I apply to compensate me for this loss.

This is ridiculous. If there was a law broken – arrest someone. If there was a rule broken fine them.   If someone feels that they were frauded – sue the lender.   However, Congress should focus on legislation (no need to remind them of their other big responsibility – oversight) instead of looking for new ways to hand out tax dollars in the very early run up to the 2008 federal elections.

Realizing that the present leadership for the 110th Congress is new to their jobs, here’s a suggested list for Rep. Pelosi, Sen. Reid and Sen. Schumer:  tax reform, medicare reform, social security reform, and immigration reform.

Al Gore’s World – Agenda vs Principle

Gore’s Latin Diplomacy   This story seems to indicate that the environment is more of an agenda item, rather than a principle for the former VP.

This helps to explain the VP’s willingness to use “carbon offsets” to justify being “brown” when it comes to his living and transportation needs.

2008 Presidential Debates – Now?

I am a real political junkie, but didn’t watch the Dem/MSNBC debate last night.

It just seems too early. We just had congressional elections in November.  I think later this year after Labor Day would be more appropriate to start the Presidential campaigning.   Besides talking about 2008 Presidential politics only gives media/political cover for the 110th Congress, which can’t seem to get legislation passed.

Lots of oversight, lots of subpoenas, lots of rhetoric, but not legislation signed sealed and delivered to those who sent them to represent them. No social security reform, no medicare reform, no immigration reform, not tax reform.  Nothing to demonstrate their interest in helping those who they represent. Everything to demonstrate that the leaders of the 110th Congress are trying to shore up their power and get a member of their own party elected to the WH.

Nothing for us, everything for themselves.

Its Still Too Early, BUT…….

…..Rudy is sounding good! Giuliani warns of ‘new 9/11′ if Dems win

Avoiding the usual pre-primary tactic of attempting to differentiating himself from the other candidates in his own party – Rudy is placing ALL of the candidates in the other party in his political sights.

The current choices between the Dems and GOP are becoming very clear and distinct. And I have been resisting engaging in the campaigning this far in advance of the election in Nov2008, BUT…..Rudy is scoring points with his recent Manchester, NH speech. He seems to have clearly articulated the choice for voters.

….Immigration Reform!!

The 110th Congress seems to think that they were elected to do the bidding of the voters and citizens wrt Iraq.  Well, using this same logic, they should also be doing something substantial about Immigration Reform as well.  A majority of people want something to be done about this situtation.

I’m not holding my breath.
